But what happened to all of the bands on the soundtrack? A handful still make headlines today -- keep fighting the good fight, Third Eye Blind's Stephan Jenkins -- but many have seemingly disappeared like your favorite Warped Tour T-shirt. So, in honor of Stifler, Oz, the Shermanator, Finch, Michelle, Vicky, Heather, Jim, Jim's Dad, the pie Jim desecrated, and the movie that made "band camp" synonymous with flute masturbation, we looked into where every band from the soundtrack is today.
Their most popular single, " Semi-Charmed Life ," was featured in American Piebut the catchy earworm isn't on the soundtrack, which instead features "New Girl," a song that has nothing to do with Zooey Deschanel.
Now: Despite multiple lineup changes, gaps between albums, and the overall decline of the grunge-pop they specialize in, Third Eye Blind endures. The group went viral last month thanks to singer Stephan Jenkins gleefully trolling crowds at the Republican National Convention and capitalized on that buzz by releasing the politically charged track " Cop vs. Donate now! Now: Despite the departure of UFO-chasing guitarist and singer Tom DeLonge, Blink released their seventh studio album, Californiathis summer to generally positive reviews and strong for !
Like the American Pie series itself, the group will live forever. Song: " Glory " Then: Still soaring from 's mega-hit "Fly," the funk-metal-gone-pop group releasedwhich proved they weren't one-hit wonders by scoring two mega-successful singles: the ubiquitous "Every Morning" and the MTV beach-party staple "Someday. Despite a lawsuit from former members of the group that makes a new record increasingly unlikely, you can still catch Sugar Ray as part of '90s Fest this September, alongside Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Sister Hazel, and host Pauly Shore.
They only released one album, Shuttercockinbut that doesn't stop people from leaving comments on their YouTube videos like, "I'm 16 now and I wish I were dead Bythey had already released a sophomore record, And You Think You Know What Life's Aboutwhich helped solidify their one-hit-wonder status by failing to produce another big single.
Now: While original lead singer J.
Richards left the band inthe group has soldiered on with new lead singer Justin Fox, and their Facebook page promises new material is coming soon. Inhe was still blowing your mind with the Grammy-nominated '90s leaving-the-bar anthem "Closing Time" from Feeling Strangely Fine.
Now: The group hasn't released a full-length since their last Universal record, Sonic Boominand they don't appear to have an active Facebook page, but according to this flyer fromthey do play the occasional local show. Song: "Summertime" Then: Songwriter Scot Sax was a member of the Philly power-pop group Wanderlust, who broke up inand then he wrote this laid-back, "Steal My Sunshine" lite jam with a band that has almost no digital footprint online.
Song: "Vintage Queen" Then: A favorite of anyone who spent long afternoons playing Tony Hawk's Pro Skaterthis LA punk band was a force in the '90s ska revival, which made them a logical choice for a movie where a character says, "I stuck a flute in my pussy.
Song: "Sway" Then: InNew Zealand singer-songwriter Bic Runga released Drivea huge multi-platinum hit in her homeland that never quite caught on in quite the same way in the US, but her ballads were perfect for scoring the emotional moments in a story about a guy who violates a pastry.
Now: With the success of New Zealand artist Lorde, you'd think now would be the perfect time for a Bic Runga comeback. She plays shows and released a mystery-soaked new track called " I Dreamed a Dream " last year, but we're still waiting for a new album. Bring on the Runga revival! Now: While the Loose Nuts are no longer together, you might recognize one member: comedian John Gemberling, who now plays fan favorite Bevers on Broad City.
Just don't expect a reunion show anytime soon. Song: "Man with the Hex" Then: This wouldn't be a truly beautiful late '90s artifact without a song from the swing revival, and horn-filled "Man with the Hex" more than serves its purpose. The Atomic Fireballs were technically a "jump blues" group, but, like, this is the end of the list -- let's not split hairs about the swing revival, OK?
Now: The group never produced a follow-up to 's Torch This Place -- apparently the title was not just a clever name -- but you can check out the current work of the group's singer John Bunkley over at his Bandcamp page.33kv substation drawing

Dan Jackson is a staff writer at Thrillist Entertainment, and eagerly awaits the next swing revival. The New Smoke.Recorded and released on the American Pie album inthe single was the number-one US hit for four weeks in and also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
In the UK, the single reached number 2, where it stayed for 3 weeks, on its original release and a reissue in reached No. The song was listed as the No. A truncated version of the song was covered by Madonna in and reached No. McLean's combined version is the fourth longest song to enter the Billboard Hot at the time of release it was the longestin addition to being the longest song to reach number one.
The repeatedly mentioned phrase " the day the music died " refers to the plane crash in that killed early rock and roll performers Buddy HollyThe Big Bopperand Ritchie Valens. McLean's description eventually became the popular name for the plane crash.
The meaning of the other lyrics has long been debated, and for decades, McLean declined to explain the symbolism behind the many characters and events mentioned; he eventually released his songwriting notes inexplaining many of the symbols in the lyrics.
The overall theme of the song is the loss of innocence of the early rock and roll generation as symbolized by the plane crash that claimed the lives of three of its heroes and various other events over the course of the s.

InMcLean's original recording was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant". While some have claimed other places, such as Saint Joseph's Universityas where the song was first performed, McLean insists that the song made its debut in Philadelphia at Temple University when he opened for Laura Nyro on March 14, The song has nostalgic themes, stretching from the late s until the late s.
They're poetry. It was also speculated that the song contains numerous references to post-World War II American events such as the murders of civil rights workers ChaneyGoodmanand Schwerner and elements of culture, including s culture e. Sorry to leave you all on your own like this but long ago I realized that songwriters should make their statements and move on, maintaining a dignified silence.
In FebruaryMcLean announced he would reveal the meaning of the lyrics to the song when the original manuscript went for auction in New York Cityin April It [life] is becoming less idyllic. I don't know whether you consider that wrong or right but it is a morality song in a sense. Mike Mills of R. I could say to people this is how to write songs. When you've written at least three songs that can be considered classic that is a very high batting average and if one of those songs happens to be something that a great many people think is one of the greatest songs ever written you've not only hit the top of the mountain but you've stayed high on the mountain for a long time.

The more hard-eyed would spot it for the cookie-cutter, formula-milking creature that it is -- full of the kind of second-generation punk-pop that goes in one ear and out the other faster than one can look up the meaning of "derivative" in the dictionary.
Ironically then, it is the unknowns who stand out in the modern-rock-by-numbers assault. On the other hand, the best thing that can be said about Alien Ant Farm's "Good For a Woman " is that it's not as wretched as their allegedly funny cover of Michael Jackson's "Smooth Criminal" which featured on the film but is absent from the album. Throw in a couple of tracks for the ladies -- the smoky, post-Spice Girls dance-pop of Angela Ammons' "Always Getting Over You" and "Halo" by Oleander -- and there is a soundtrack that's entirely predictable and largely one-dimensional, but sporadically enjoyable all the same.

Another sequel, American Reunionwas released nine years later. This stands as the last film in the series to be written by Herz, who conceptualized the franchise, and also the only film in the series that does not star Chris Kleinwho plays Oz. The film's main plot focuses on the wedding ceremony of Jim Levenstein and Michelle Flaherty, and a subplot centers on Steve Stifler, and his outrageous antics including his attempt to organize a bachelor party, teaching Jim to dance for the wedding, and competing with Finch to win the heart of Michelle's sister, Cadence.
While on a date in a fancy restaurant with Michelle Flaherty, Jim Levenstein is ready to propose to her. Jim's dad calls to inform him that he has the ring. Michelle misinterprets when Jim stalls the question. Jim's dad arrives as Jim is receiving fellatioand a mishap grasps the restaurant's attention. Jim proposes and Michelle accepts.

Jim wants to exclude Steve Stifler from the wedding, having concerns that Stifler's behavior is not socially acceptable. When Jim is worried about learning to dance, Stifler agrees to teach him.
Jim also asks Stifler to tone down his obnoxious personality, in exchange that he be allowed to attend the wedding and host a bachelor party. The boys go on a road trip when they discover there is only one designer who makes the dress that Michelle wants. They go to Chicago looking for "Leslie Summers"; Stifler unwittingly walks into a gay barand his raucous behavior gets him into a dispute with several patrons.
Stifler challenges one of these patrons, Bear, to a dance-off. Stifler wins, and Bear offers to provide strippers for the bachelor party.
Leslie reveals himself and agrees to make the dress for Michelle and hits on Kevin Myers, who is uncomfortable with the unrequited attention. Michelle's parents, who were initially skeptical of Jim, agree to have a preliminary dinner with him. Michelle's younger sister, Cadence, flies in for the wedding. Both Paul Finch and Stifler are attracted to her, and in an effort to win her over, they each adopt the other's personality and mannerisms.
Stifler arranges the bachelor party, including strippers, for everyone at Jim's house except Jim, who unknowingly has arranged dinner with Michelle's parents there. The party is abruptly halted by the unexpected return of the three. With assistance from Bear, who poses as a butler named " Mr. Belvedere ", Jim nearly succeeds in keeping the activities a secret, until Michelle's mother opens a closet door and is shocked to find Kevin inside, stripped to his boxers and tied to a chair.
The boys explain that it was an attempt to make Jim seem like a hero that went wrong, and Michelle's parents accept this and tell him that if he puts that much effort into the upcoming marriage, they can give their blessing.
Michelle is concerned that Jim's paternal grandmother may dislike her for not being Jewish. She is also concerned about Stifler having been invited to the wedding.
On the night before the wedding, Stifler inadvertently disrupts the walk-in refrigerator's power supply while retrieving a bottle of champagne in an attempt to seduce Cadence. Previously, Stifler—unaware of Cadence's presence—had revealed his true rude and obnoxious personality.Sysoperation framework in d365fo
When Stifler later returns, the flowers are dead. Jim asks him to leave, and all the others, including Cadence, support Jim's decision. Feeling guilty for his thoughtless behavior, Stifler convinces the florist to put together a new batch of flowers, and he enlists the help of his football players and Bear.
As a gesture of remorse, he also gives a rose to Cadence, much to the amazement of Jim and Michelle. Moved by his actions, Cadence agrees to have sex with him in a supply closet before the ceremony, but Stifler's presence is delayed by a brief thank-you meeting Jim calls among his groomsmen, citing how he is grateful to have friends like them to back him up.
Quickly returning to the hotel, Stifler hears someone in the supply closet and steps inside, unaware that Cadence was interrupted by wedding preparations and that the ushers, the MILF guys from high school, placed Jim's grandmother in that closet to sustain her hostility about the wedding; Stifler only realizes this upon walk-in by Finch and Kevin. She becomes pleasant, particularly towards Stifler, making Michelle and Jim's dad unknowingly happy.
Despite the chaotic events leading up to it, Michelle and Jim get married. At the reception, the couple dances while Stifler dances with Cadence.American Pie was designed to bring Porky's into the '90s -- no mean feat, since Porky's was made in the '80s and set in the '50s.
Since it followed There's Something About Mary, the filmmakers were allowed to take some vulgar liberties unimaginable in the '80s. Unlike Mary, the filmmakers didn't weave a distinct soundtrack into their movie.
It's impossible to think of the Farrelly brothers' masterpiece without thinking of Jonathan Richman 's running chorus or the positioning of Joe Jackson 's "Is She Really Going Out with Him" or the closing "Build Me Up Buttercup" -- the songs were not only a soundtrack, they were a running commentary on the film itself.
That's not the case with American Pie, which is a sleek, smooth-running corporate machine. Universal released both the film and its soundtrack, and quite a few Universal artists are featured on the record, including debut cuts from a number of new acts.
If you're wondering why you don't recognize about half the names on the record, that's the reason why. That's not necessarily a bad thing, actually, since some of the debut cuts -- Shades Apart 's "Stranger by the Day," Bachelor Number One 's "Summertime," and Super TransAtlantic 's "Super Down," in particular -- hold their own quite nicely, but the main problem is that all the songs on the album sound too damn similar. It's all radio-ready modern rock. Whether it's post-grunge pop or tempered ska-punk or lunkheaded neo-swing, it all shares the same clean production and a reliance on distorted guitars for sonic coloring; the two Bic Runga songs -- one her signature tune, "Sway," the other, "Good Morning Baby," a duet with " Dan Wilson of Semisonic " -- and arguably Bachelor Number One 's tune are the only time the post-grunge bombast takes a breather.
Taken individually, some of these tracks work and may sound good on the radio for instance, Tonic 's lead single, "You Wanted More," has more personality on the airwaves than it does herebut everything blends together too much to leave a lasting impression.

This white guy faux beach pseudo rap is nearly impossible to listen to from start to finish. As it scores a moment of forced sexual exploration and the subsequent gross out gag to follow, one has to wonder whether it was actually selected by the music supervisor, or if it was just put in as filler and they forgot to go in and add a song with some actual street cred. Sugar Ray made the cut because they were all but printing money in the late 90s, but this song just makes you want to take a shower.
Apparently, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones said no to the soundtrack and some out of touch studio exec thought The Loose Nuts were close enough. The late 90s seemed to have every act looking to the past, but one of the most baffling nostalgia trends was the swing revival.
Inoffensive soundtrack padding, it just feels like diet Blink Regardless, it feels right at home in a 90s teen sex comedy. The song is a perfectly serviceable late 90s rock ballad, if not particularly memorable. The song is very much stranded in time, but never in a way that makes it unbearable. It was a safe pick for the mix cd you made for your eighth grade crush. So much of American Pie is consumed by the male adolescent sexual desire in its unchecked form, but rarely does it dive into the emotional drive behind the lust.
They were already preaching the gospel of American Pie long before the movie was in the works, so it was only fitting that they would gift the soundtrack its most memorable song. In fact, they match the atmosphere so well that they even make a tongue-in-cheek cameo in the movie as a local garage band who watch Jim and Nadia during their mortifying webcast.
